Nile River-Gods & Religion
Who was Hapi in relation to the Nile? How did the Egyptians describe him? The river God was called Hapi. They described him as green and with a bulging stomach. He may have been green because of the crops and farming that the Nile gave the Egyptians. He was called the king of the river, father of all the fishes and his friends were the frog-goddesses and crocodile. Who was Osiris in relation to the Nile? How did the Egyptians describe him? Osiris was a respected God and was often thanked by Egyptians for all the good things they had like food, water and the Nile flood. He was described green or blue for the same reasons of Hapi. He was also than the other Gods. He earned the name of good one. He was also known to cause the Nile flood. What is Osiris’s story? One day Osiris was invited to a party by his brother Seth. Seth was jealous of Osiris and wanted to take his place as Pharaoh. Once everyone was having fun Seth brought out beautiful chest and said anyone that could perfectly they could keep it. When Osiris’s turn came he fitted perfectly. Seth sealed the chest before Osiris could escape. Seth then pushed the chest into the Nile. Where did the Egyptians worship the Gods? The Egyptians worshipped the Gods in a temple in the middle of Egypt. The Gods all had their own chamber that was cared for by the Pharaoh. People were not allowed in this temple so festivals would be held outside when a statue was taken out for procession. Festival would normally mean a carnival and sacrifices to the Gods. The most worshipped Gods were Osiris, Ra, Horus and Hathor. What was the star of the Nile? The star Sirius commonly known as the Dog Star was to the Egyptians called Sopder named after the Goddess. It would disappear 70 days before the Nile flood and reappear just before it. The Egyptians though this star to be a blessing from the Gods because it acted as a sign when the flood was to come.
